Lloyd was born on Aug. 25, 1919, the youngest child of Joseph Lafayette and Olive Jane (Myers) Lunger on a farm outside of Morrison, Okla.
Lloyd’s mother sold eggs to put him through Oklahoma State University. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, he was notified of his appointment as an aviation Cadet and ordered to report for training to Kelley Field, Texas by Dec. 18, 1941. From there, he was deployed with the 81st Bombardment
Squadron, 12th Bombardment Group, "The Earthquakers", to support the Allied efforts in North Africa to rout Rommel’s North Africa Corp.
Lloyd was awarded the Purple Heart and Silver Star after 50 missions over enemy territory in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. After discharge from service in 1945, Lloyd enlisted in the Air Force Reserve, from which he retired in 1963 as a Lieutenant Colonel. He continued to fly until his later years, owning his own Beech Bonanza.
In 1952, the family moved to Augusta, where Lloyd bought an existing furniture business that became Lunger Furniture. Lloyd was an astute, successful businessman, running what came to be known as Lunger’s of Augusta. He sold his business upon retirement in 1985, but continued to provide sage business advice to his family.
Lloyd was predeceased by his parents, six siblings, and his wife of 58 years Cleo Fern (Williams).
