Newell T. Leavitt dies in Wichita
Newell T. Leavitt, 73, Route 1, died Saturday at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Lakeview All Faith Chapel in Wichita. Rev. Delmar Becker will officiate and burial will be in the Lakeview Gardens Cemetery.
He was born Jan. 15, 1912 in Kansas to William E. and Ella Turnbull Leavitt.
He married Emma Lenertz. She survives.
He was a retired tire service worker and a veteran of World War II.
Others survives, Eddie L.D. Leavitt of Blue Springs, Mo.; two stepsons, Charles E. Hobbs of Augusta and Bill Hobbs of Wichita; a daughter, Virgie Harrison of Leon; a stepdaughter, Rita Day of Eureka; a brother, Earl E. Leavitt of New Orleans, La.; sisters, Eva Sanders of Mankato, Violet Bennett of Hastings, Neb., and Lilly Terrell of Dallas, Texas; eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Lakeview Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
REV. AMOS WILLIAMS OFFICIATES AT SERVICE
Rev. Amos Williams of Augusta officiated today at funeral services for his son’s mother-in-law, Emma Bowers. Mrs. Bowers was a retired registered nurse and burial was in Sterling, Kan.

Ex-Augustan dies at 79
Thelma Elliott, 79, Littleton, Colo., former Augusta resident, died Monday at a hospital in Denver, Colo.
Her funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Downing & Lahey Mortuary in Wichita. Rev. Gordon Dorian will officiate and burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery.
She was born Jan. 31, 1906 in Sweden, Mo., to Isaac Seaton and Sarah Ann Spurlock Smith.
She married Cecil Elliott Sept. 18, 1922. He preceded her in death in 1966.
She lived in Augusta for about 15 years.
She was a member of the Calvary Methodist Church in Wichita.
Survivors include sons, Glenn Elliott of Littleton, Ronald Elliott of Wichita; daughters, Glenda Kelly of Tennessee, Margie England of Derby, Sandra West of Morrison, Colo.; a brother, Clinton Smith of Sidney, Neb.; two sisters, Maude Robertson and Hazel Robison, both of Lindsborg; a grandson whom she raised, Steve Branaman of Littleton and 12 other grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.
Other survivors include a nephew, Bill E. Smith and a niece, Florence Thornton, both of Augusta.

Thomas Callaway dies at AMCI
Thomas Eugene Callaway, 77, Douglass, died Tuesday at the Augusta Medical Complex.
His funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home in Douglass. Burial will be in the Douglass Cemetery.
He was born Aug. 31, 1907 in Tonkawa, Okla., to Joseph and Lillian Fountain Calloway.
He was a retired farmer. He had been a member of the Douglass Township Board and the local watershed committee.
Survivors include two cousins, Bill Callaway of Winfield and Dr. Gerald Smith of San Antonio, Texas.
Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Elsie Howard service today
Elsie Howard, 87, Augusta, a homemaker, died Saturday.
Services were held at 1:30 p.m. today at Downing & Lahey Mortuary in Wichita. Burial was in White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Wichita.
Mrs. Howard was born March 31, 1897, in Greenwich, to Edo Erdwien and Minnie Kramer. She married Cecil Howard, who preceded her in death in 1982.
Survivors include three sons, James O. of Andover, Wilbur of Wichita, Donald R. of Grove, Okla.; nine grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
John Sontag died Feb. 20
John Oliver Sontag, 82, El Dorado, a retired farmer and rancher, died Wednesday. He was the brother of Augusta resident Hazel Baldwin.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Kirby-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in El Dorado. Burial will be in the Latham Cemetery.
Sontag was born Jan. 3, 1903, near Latham to Louis and Doshia Thompson Sontag. He married Henrietta Gibson May 17, 1922 in El Dorado. She survives.
The lifelong Butler County resident was a past president of the Farm Bureau. He served 25 years as a board member of the Soil Conservation Service. He was a lifetime member of the watershed board. He was affiliated with the Christian church and a member of the Latham Masonic Lodge 410 AF&AM.
Other survivors include two sons, John O. Jr. of Honolulu and Merwyn of Kerrville, Texas; daughter Barbara Holderman of El Dorado; brother, William of Derby; two sisters, Hazel Baldwin of Augusta and Louise Doxsee of Wichita; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial has been established with the Kansas Heart Fund.
