W.M. Gallagher rites Saturday
Winnifred Mae Gallagher, 67, Lamed, sister of Irene McCaffree and Inger Pennington, both of Augusta, died yesterday at St. Joseph’s Memorial Hospital in Lamed after a long illness.
A funeral service will be conducted at the Morrell Funeral Home in Lamed at 9 a.m. Saturday and a second service will be held at the Dunsford Funeral Home here at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon. Burial will be in Augusta’s Elmwood Cemetery.
She was born Winnifred Feglem May 10, 1918 just west of Leon.
In 1938, she married Clarence W. Gallagher in Wichita. He died in 1955 and she has remained a resident of Larned since 1965.
She was a licensed mental health technician until her retirement in 1979. Gallagher was also a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, the American Legion Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary.
She also leaves two sons, Ronald of Lamed and Merle of Kent, Wash.; three daughters Sybil Dole, Diane Wells and Beverly Brown, all of Larend; another sister, Geneva Jones of Wichita; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions to the Winnifred Gallagher Scholarship Fund should be made
through the Morrell Funeral Home at Lamed which is in charge of the arrangements.

VanMeter buried in Indiana
Augusta resident Walter R. “Hap” VanMeter, 64, was buried Saturday, July 20, in Monticello, Ind. He died July 17 at Augusta Medical Complex.
Van Meter was a retired RCA employee who spent most of his life in Monticello, but lived his final 11 months in Augusta.
He had been in ill health for two years and had been seriously ill for eight months.
VanMeter was born in White County, Ind., on Oct. 2, 1920, to Cecil and Maggie Baer VanMeter.
He married the former Betty Woods who preceded him in death in 1958.
He was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Monticello. VanMeter was a veteran of the United State Army. His burial was with full military rites.
Survivors include a son, Robert M. VanMeter of Augusta; a brother, Gene VanMeter, Citra, Fla.; four sisters, Eva Low, Lula Garinger, June Burnett and Joann Sigman, all of Monticello; one step-brother, Raymond Ferdinand, and three grandchildren.
Twin sons, two brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.

Vada Fernald Malcolm, 83, 225 Columbia, died Saturday at Knutson Manor nursing home in El Dorado,
A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Dunsford Funeral Home.
She was born July 15, 1902 in Monmouth, Ill., to John Brook and Winnifred Capps Fernald.
She married Harold O. Malcolm Dec. 21, 1957 in Miami, Fla. He preceded her in death in 1957.
She was an English teacher in El Dorado, Whitewater, Miami Beach, Fla., Cawrizozo, N.M., Naselle, Wash., and Gillette, Wyo.
Survivors include a brother, Ted Fernald of Dunedin, Fla.

Mother dies Saturday at 97
Anna Dechant, 97, Hays, mother of Alice Legleiter of Augusta, died Saturday at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Hays.
Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays. Father Felix Petrovsky will officiate. The rosary will be said at 8 tonight at the Hays Memorial Chapel.
A memorial has been established with the St. Joseph Catholic School in Hays.
She was born Oct. 2, 1887 in Munjor, Kan., to Raymond and Amelia Befort Speier.
She married Joseph Dechant Nov. 7, 1907 in Munjor. He preceded her in death Oct. 30, 1974.
She was a lifetime Ellis County resident and a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
Other survivors include sons, William, Richard, Walter, all of Hays, Eugene of Wichita; daughters, Josephine Legleiter, Stella Vonfeldt, both of Hays, Eleanor King of Denver, Colo. Mabel Riedel of Walker, Marcella and Adeline Zimmerman, both of Wichita, brothers, John Speier of Hays, Henry Speier of Wichita; sister, Rosa Pfannenstiel of Denver; 36 grandchildren, 64 great-grandchildren and 24 great-great-grandchildren.
