R.L. 'Roy’ Long dies in Halstead
Robert L. “Roy” Long, 77, Douglass, died Saturday in the Halstead hospital.
His funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home in Douglass. Bob Brandt will officiate and burial will be in the Douglass Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Kansas Lung Association.
He was born Oct. 27, 1907 in Augusta to Orville and Glenn Starkey Long.
He married Mary Gwendolyn Goatley April 8, 1925 in El Dorado. She survives.
He was a retired oil field worker.
Other survivors include a son, Bob of El Dorado; brothers, Bill of Augusta and Gerald of Ponca City, Okla.; two grandsons, and three great-grandchildren.

Rites tomorrow for mother
Vida D. Brown, 64, Wichita, mother of Terry Brown of Augusta, died Friday at the Riverside Hospital in Wichita.
Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Broadway Mortuary. Graveside service will be at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow at the Oxford, Kan., cemetery.
She was born July 10, 1921 in Anthony to Leonidas and Mabel Newhauser Asper.
She married Harold Brown who preceded her in death in 1983.
She was a Starkey Developmental Center worker trainer.
Other survivors include sons Larry of Winfield, Alan of Wichita; a daughter, Beverly Wagoner of Wichita; mother, Mabel Asper of Wichita; brothers, Darwin Asper of Woodland Park, Colo., L.C. Asper Jr. of Winfield, Richard Asper of Kansas City, Mo.; sister, Marilyn Myers of Chula Vista, Calif., and eight grandchildren.
A memorial has been established with the Starkey Development Center.

Jesse Ratcliff dies in Wichita
Jesse Ratcliff, 89, Abilene, father of Irene Turner of Augusta, died Tuesday at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Wichita.
His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Kirby Morris Funeral Home in El Dorado. Burial will in Sunset Lawns Cemetery there.
He was born April 25, 1896 in Siloam Springs, Ark., to Harvey P. and Samantha Wright Ratcliff.
He married Marcia Mabel Allen in McPherson on May 21, 1921. She preceded him in death in 1960.
He operated an open air fruit and vegetable market and ice house in El Dorado. He was also a dairy farmer and worked as a custom truck driver.
Survivors also include daughters, Dorothy Perry and Pat Mitchell, both of El Dorado, Mickey Gamble of Abilene and Mildred Schneider of Mesa, Ariz.; sons, Jack of Newton and Clegg of El Dorado; a sister, Flora Conway of Wichita; 24 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Rosa Attebery rites Saturday
Rosa Attebery, 88, Wichita, a former resident of Douglass, died Wednesday at her home.
Her funeral will be 2 o’clock Saturday at the Douglass Church of Christ with Dalton Key officiating. Burial will be in the Dunlap Cemetery at Rose Hill.
She was born May 15, 1897 at Piedmont to Samuel and Henrietta Mason.
She married Orville Attebery Dec. 18, 1929 at Delta, Colo. He preceded her in death in 1977.
Mrs. Attebery was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include a son, Charles Attebery of Derby; four daughters, Louise Lowery of Denver, Colo., Eleanor Honer of Van Nuys, Calif., Ethel Allen of Wichita, Maxine Lewis of Wichita Falls, Texas, 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home at Douglass is in charge of arrangements.

SAM CASTLE ... car salesman
Sam Castle dies at 65
Sam Castle, 65, 116 E. Kelly, died yesterday at the Augusta Medical Complex.
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Dunsford Funeral Home. Rev. Richard Axmann will officiate and burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Augusta Medical Complex.
He was born May 5, 1920 in Stewartsville, Mo., to Clarence Elmer and Annie Bauer Castle.
He married Betty Munson Nov. 7, 1948 in Newton. She survives.
Castle was a car salesman for Scott Davies Chevrolet Inc. in El Dorado.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church and served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Other survivors include daughters, Loxie Ream of El Dorado, Karen Eberting of Olathe and Camille Deer of Overland Park; brothers, Stewart of Tempe, Ariz., Donald of Stewartsville, Mo., and Glen of Cameron, Mo.; sisters, Vinita Dyer of Osbourn, Mo., and Vera Marshall of Maysville, Mo., and 12 grandchildren.
A sister and a brother preceded him in death.
