Augustan’s father dies in Lawrence
Dean D. Nesmith, 71, athletic trainer at the University of Kansas for 46 years, died Tuesday at his home in Lawrence after an extended illness.
He was the father of Dr. Leslie W. Nesmith of rural Augusta.
In addition to the son here, Nesmith is survived by his wife, Laura; a daughter, three brothers and two sisters, eight grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.
The Warren-McElwain funeral home said a memorial service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 4, at KU’s Memorial Stadium.
Nesmith, a native of Belleville, Kan., was a three-year football letterman as a tackle at Kansas and then played one year of professional football before earning his degree in 1937. He joined the KU staff as trainer the following year and continued until retiring in 1983, giving him the longest tenure of any trainer in the Big Eight.
Among the Jayhawk stars during that period were Wilt Chamberlain, Gayle Sayers, Glenn Cunningham, Clyde Lovellette, Al Orter, Jim Ryun, John Hadl, Jo Jo White and Nolan Cromwell.
Nesmith was trainer for the 1960 U.S. Olympic basketball team and toured Yugoslavia with the Big Eight All-Star basketball team in 1974.
“When you lose someone like Dean Nesmith, it’s the same as losing a member of your famly,” said Athletic Director Monte Johnson. “When you consider there are so few people who dedicated their whole life to one business or one organization as Deaner did, it’s just impossible to put into words what you really feel.”
