Ex-superintendent here dies at Topeka hospital
James Benjamin, 55, Manhattan, a former Augusta school superintendent, died Monday at a Topeka hospital.
His funeral was at 2 p.m. today at the Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Garnett. Rev. Gary Benjamin officiated and burial was in the Garnett Cemetery.
He was born Nov. 16, 1930 in Garnett to Otto and Dortha Whaley Benjamin.
Benjamin had also been superintendent of schools in Manhattan. He was a high school principal here before succeeding H.H. Robinson as Augusta’s school superintendent.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Manhattan, the American Association of School Administrators, Phi Delta Kappa, Council for Basic Education, the Manhattan Rotary Club and the National Education Association.
Survivors include daughters, Jamie Dillard of Denton, Texas, Julia Benjamin of Newton; parents, Otto and Dortha Benjamin of Garnett; brothers, Richard of Olathe, John, Don, both of Garnett, and sister, Carol Parks of Garnett.
A memorial has been established with Robinson Education Center of Manhattan.
Harry Andrus died Monday
Harry J. Andrus, 91, Augusta, died Monday at the Walnut Valley Nursing Home here.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Elmwood Cemetery. Rev. Burl Allison Jr. will officiate.
He was born Jan. 30, 1895 in Lahoma, Okla., to George William and Lizzie Allen Andrus.
He married Ella Dora Young Feb. 5, 1914 in Thomas, Okla. She preceded him in death July 17, 1985.
Andrus was a retired carpenter. Survivors include sons, Ralph of Augusta and Jesse of Wichita; daughter, Ella Mae Whitacre of Valley Center; brothers, Allen of
Wichita and Richard N. of Smithville, Texas; sisters, Fay Baker of Littleton, Colo., and Ada Edwards of Wichita; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Three brothers, four sisters, a granddaughter, and twin grandsons, preceded him in death.
The Dunsford Funeral Home of Augusta is in charge of arrangements.

Harry E. Jones, 88, 1201 Money, died today at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Wichita.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Dunsford Funeral Home.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty L. Myers of rural Augusta.

‘Jackie’ Young died in Wichita
Wilma “Jackie” J. Young, 54, Latham, sister of Juanita Kingsley of Augusta, died Saturday at St. Joseph Medical Center in Wichita.
Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Swisher-Taylor-Morris Funeral Home in Winfield. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Latham, Kan., cemetery.
She was born Oct. 16, 1932 in Atlanta to Russell and Ida Moore Smith.
She married Marvin Young May 16, 1950 in Beaumont. He survives.
She was a retired Binney-Smith Crayola Co. employee.
Other survivors include sons, Eddy R., Foster Ray, both of Latham, Marvin Gene of Winfield; daughter, Cindy Andes of Winfield, and 10 grandchildren.

Bessie E. Prigel dies in Texas
Bessie Estella Prigel, 88, Granbury, Texas, mother of Maxine Smith of Augusta, died Saturday at a hospital there.
Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at the Dunsford Funeral Home. Rev. Jon Grissom will officiate and burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Augusta Senior Citizens Center.
She was born Feb. 21, 1898 in Raytown, Mo., to Jerry Clifton and Murella Kingsbury Day.
She married Charles Reier Prigel Nov. 26, 1917 in Independence, Mo. He preceded her in death in 1966.
She was a member of the First Christian Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.
Other survivors include a son, Walter of Apple Valley, Calif.; a daughter, Regina Reed of Granbury; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A son, Ernest, preceded her in death in 1985.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Atlanta, Kan., cemetery. C. Verne Myers, orator for Patmos Lodge 97 in El Dorado will officiate.
Memorials have been established with the Augusta Library and the American Heart Association.
He was born May 17, 1898 in Conway Springs to Charles Edwin and Grace E. Harris Jones.
He married Marietta Jones March 25, 1920 in Wichita. She preceded him in death March 17, 1974.
He was an oil field gauger for Co-Op Petroleum. He was a member of the El Dorado Blue Lodge.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty L. Myers of Augusta; a brother, Speck Jones of Salem, Ore.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
