Austin Phillips dies, funeral on Saturday
Austin Phillips, 79, Augusta, died yesterday at the Augusta Medical Complex.

Before entering the real estate and insurance business, Phillips owned and operated a grocery store in the 600 block of State Street and farmed near Latham.
Clovis Cash, a longtime friend, recalls that Phillips and his father started the grocery store. “It was called the Pan Tree,” Cash explains. “They opened the store probably in the mid-1920's and operated it for about 15 years until a fire destroyed the business one January.
“It was a very popular store. They had all kinds of merchandise. A lot of the goods were stacked in the middle of the floor. He didn't have stuff displayed like they do now. Because of that he was able to sell at a lower price. He had a good meat department, too. Spencer Ryan was a

After the fire, Phillips took his family to Latham where he farmed. Later he returned to Augusta and started the real estate and insurance business.
