Thomas Pierce died Saturday
Thomas E. Pierce, 53, a former Augustan who served as past president of the Kansas AFL-CIO, died Saturday at his Wichita home.
Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Union Cemetery in Benton. Theron Blake will officiate.
A memorial has been established at the trust department at Bank IV in Wichita.
He was born June 18, 1932 in Belle Plaine to Eugene Holmes and Thelma E. Avers Pierce.
He married Judy L. Cameron. She survives.
He graduated from Augusta High School in 1950 and served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
He served two terms as president of the state federation of labor. He was twice elected president of the Wichita AFL-CIO.
In 1956, he went to work at Beech Aircraft as a brake operator. He worked the rest of his life for the aircraft manufacturer and for the International Association of Machinists, District 70.
In the union, he was a shop steward, organizer, business agent, contract negotiator and elected official. In 1976, he was elected district secretary-treasurer. He had that post until his death.
Survivors include his wife, Judy; a daughter, Deborah Quade of Wichita; a stepdaughter, Pandora Cameron of Wichita, mother, Thelma Pierce of Augusta; brothers, Max of El Dorado and George of Oklahoma City, Okla., sisters, Joan Watts of Wichita and Joyce Daniels of Augusta, and two grandchildren.

Matthew W. Carle dies in Wichita
Matthew Wayne Carle, 1 1/2-year-old son of Donald and Karen Carle of Andover, died yesterday at St. Joseph Medical Center in Wichita.
His funeral will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Dunsford Funeral Home in Augusta. Rev. Robert Brooks will officiate and burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
He was born Nov. 5, 1984 in Wichita to Donald W. and Karen Ruth Davis Carle.
Other survivors include grandparents, Richard and Delores Nichols of Wichita, and Joyce Paul of Augusta.

Vera G. White dies at 79
Vera Greta White, 79, rural El Dorado, died Saturday at the Augusta Medical Complex.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at the Elmwood Cemetery. Rev. Jon Grisson, pastor of Augusta’s First Christian Church, will officiate.
She was born Feb. 18, 1907 in Kansas to Joe and Lulu Marsland Ellis.
She married Marvin Davis White May 5, 1929 in Wichita. He preceded her in death in 1965.
She was a former school teacher and restaurant owner. She was a member of the Christian
Church.
Survivors include daughters, Carol Rowland and Karen Strang, both of El Dorado; a brother, Dan K. Ellis of Shell Knob, Mo., and three grandchildren.
A brother and a sister preceded her in death.
The Dunsford Funeral Home of Augusta is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with the American Lung Association.

Lonnie Bowers dies in Wichita
Lonnie H. Bowers, 61, Douglass, died Saturday at St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Richland Cemetery, west of Douglass. Bill Buggeln will officiate.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society.
He was born July 15, 1924 in Douglass to Leo and Ann Asmussen Bowers.
He married Gloria Pegg Jan. 4, 1948 in Winfield. She preceded him in death in August of 1985.
He was a retired tooling supervisor for Boeing Military Aircraft Co. in Wichita.
He was a member of the Douglass American Legion Post, a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Augusta Church of Christ. He served in the army during World War II.
Survivors include a son, Larry of Douglass; a daughter, Connie Hearne of Fall River; sisters, Eva Lee of Oxford, Ruth Haggans and Betty Smithers, both of Fort Collins, Colo., Leota Johnson of Dickinson, N.D., and three grandchildren.
Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home in Douglass is in charge of arrangements.
