James W. Scaife died in California
James W. Scaife, 64, Ukiah, Calif., brother of Vera Deaton of Augusta, died in Ukiah Friday.
His funeral will be there.
He was born Oct. 18, 1921 in Monroe, La.
He enlisted in the Army and was stationed at Corrigidor when it was captured by the Japanese, according to his sister.
Mrs. Deaton reports her brother survived the “infamous Bataan Death March” and was held captive for 3 1/2 years. He suffered permanent disability due to injuries he received while he was imprisoned.
Survivors include his wife, Rosella Scribner Scaife; a daughter, Mary Sue; brothers, Travis Scaife of Conroe, Texas and Elmore Scaife of Ukiah, Calif; other sisters, Maxine Darden and Martha Irion, both of Monroe, La.; several nieces and nephews.

Mabel L. Potter died yesterday
Mabel L. Potter, 79, Wichita, mother of L.D. Potter of Augusta, died Monday at Susan B. Allen Hospital in El Dorado.
Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Culbertson-Smith Mortuary in Wichita. Rev. Melvin Crane will officiate and burial will be in Resthaven Gardens of Memory in Wichita.
She was born July 26, 1907 in Princeton to Joseph C. and Mary Alberta Butler.
She married Owen L. Potter Oct. 19, 1926 in Ottawa. He died in 1973.
Other survivors include daughters, Doreles Jean Luper of Westville, Okla., Beverly Ann Pryor of Wichita; brothers, James Leslie Clark of Landers, Calif.; sister, Marie Lois McGee of Taft, Calif.; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial has been established with The Arthritis Foundation of Kansas, 1602 E. Waterman, Wichita, Kan., 67211.

Ralph E. Pence died Friday at 82
Ralph E. Pence, 82, Iola, father of Jim Pence of Augusta, died Friday at his home.
His funeral was at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Waugh-Yokum Chapel in Iola. Rev. Ray Firestone officiated and burial was in the Highland Cemetery at Iola.
He was born April 1, 1904 in Manchester, Ohio to Wilie and Daisy Ellis Pence.
He married Thelma Ray Jan. 20, 1945 in Kansas City, Mo. She survives.
He was a retired machinist.
Other survivors include a son, Emerson of Centerville, Ohio and Bill Pence of Chanute; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial has been established with Wesley United Methodist Church in Iola.

Wilma J. Duncan died in Wichita
Wilma Jane Duncan, 70, Wichita, sister of Royce Weir of Douglass, died Monday at her home.
Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the DeVorss Mortuary in Wichita. Rev. Charles Greer will officiate and burial will be in the White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Wichita.
She was born Sept. 13, 1915 in Wichita to Carl and Josephine Holmes Weir.
She married N.M. Duncan Sept. 26, 1936 in Wichita. He survives.
Other survivors include a son, David of the home; daughter, Kathleen Rice of Wichita; brothers, Dewight Weir of Las Cruces, N.M., Murel Weir of Sedgwick; sisters, Volice Hilderbrand of Slidell, La., Lavon Olson of Hillsdale, Mich., Clarice Woolston of Brossier City, La., and three grandchildren.

Roy Irvin died yesterday at AMCI
Roy Irvin, 59, Winfield, father of Royann Little and Michael Irvin, both of Douglass, died Monday at the Augusta Medical Center.
His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Miles Memorial Chapel in Winfield. Rev. Dan Ferguson will officiate and burial will be in the Highland Cemetery in Winfield.
Memorials have been established with the H.L. Snyder Memorial Research Foundation in Winfield.
He was born Jan. 17, 1927 in Moutain Grove, Mo., to Lawrence and Maude Jarrett Irvin.
He married Shirley Mace Jan. 20, 1945 in Newkirk, Okla. She survives.
Mr. Irvin worked for the Santa Fe Railway Co., Greif Brothers Corporation, Boeing Military Aircraft Co. and Cessna Aircraft. He retired from Cessna in 1983.
He managed a county western dance band “Wagon Wheel Express”. He was a member of the Millington Street Baptist Church in Winfield. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
Others survivors include sons, Ronald Irvin of Derby and Donald Irvin of Winfield; mother, Maude Hornberger of Winfield, and seven grandlchildren.
