Town’s shoemaker dies, buried today at Elmwood
Augusta’s longtime shoe repairman Jesse V. “Jess” Chisman, 71, 1228 State Street, died Wednesday, Dec. 31.
His funeral was this afternoon in the Dunsford Funeral Home chapel. Rev. George Goudie of the First Southern Baptist Church officiated and burial was in the Elmwood Cemetery.
Chisman, grandson of Congressional Medal of Honor recipient William W. Chisman who fought in the American Civil War, reportedly learned the shoe repair trade as a youngster from town cobbler Harry Williams.
When he tried to enlist for the military during World War II, Chisman was reportedly deferred because he was classified as the “only shoemaker in Kansas.”
He operated Chisman Shoe Repair Service in the 400 block of State Street for 43 years before retirement. The leather goods repair/sales business has been continued by his family.
He enjoyed working on antique vehicles and his Model T Ford truck was a popular entry in local parades. He also enjoyed flying and shared ownership of an airplane.
Chisman held membership in the Southern Baptist Church, Kansa Traveler Campers and the International Order of Odd Fellows.
Jesse Vernon Chisman was
born July 16, 1915 in Telton, Okla., as a son of William Sherman and Ivy Lucey Donahue Chisman.
He came to Kansas with his family in a covered wagon and settled on land just west of Augusta.
On March 23, 1934, he married Mary Eliza Tyndall in a ceremony at Wichita. She died in May of 1966.
He and the former Cleta M. Miller were wed April 3, 1982. She survives.
Chisman also leaves two daughters, Jessie Jolene “Jo” Palmer of Augusta, and Lavina K. Kidd of McPherson, and a sister, Bernice Matthews of Monterey, Calif., five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Chisman.
