Rural Leon man killed in house fire
By MARY L. HODSON Gazette Area Editor
A rural Leon man died when fire engulfed his two-story house northwest of Leon this morning.
Butler County sheriff Dave Williams identified the victim as 60-year-old Eugene Gilson of rural Leon.
“The victim was known to be a heavy smoker,” Williams said. “When the body was recovered, it looked as if he had been sitting in a recliner that was possibly in the living room.”
A spokesman from the El Dorado Department of Public Safety said the fire was reported around 7 a.m. today three miles north and about a mile west of Leon.
Fire units from Leon and Rosalia assisted two units from El Dorado at the scene.
“When firefighters arrived the house was engulfed in flames,” the sheriff said. “After the fire was out, they sifted through the rubbage until the victim was found. That was about 11 a.m. today. We believe he (the victim) was in the living room.”
Authorities believe there was no foul play in Gilson’s death. No one else was living in the house. Gilson reportedly ran a salvage yard in Leon.
Funeral arrangements for the victim are pending at the Dunsford Funeral Home.
A brother, Paul Gilson of Leon, is among the survivors.
