Roger McKinney
...a respected banker
McKinney funeral tomorrow
By MARY L. HODSON Gazette Area Editor
Roger McKinney, the man who captured the respect of Augusta residents as he helped them deal with personal and business-related financial matters, died Saturday at St. Joseph Medical Center in Wichita.
The funeral service for Mr. McKinney, the 51-year-old president and director of Prairie State Bank in Augusta, will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the First United Methodist Church. Rev. Harold E. Kieler will officiate and burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery.
Many who knew him as a banker felt a special kinship that surpassed the walls of Prairie State Bank where he had worked since 1974.
“It is awfully hard to say anything when you lose a friend,” explains PSB board chairman Newton Male. “You’re stunned when you suffer such a big lose. It is a private time for every person.”
Most people remember Mr. McKinney for his smile, a handshake, a friendly greeting and his wit
Family members and close friends
focus on the eight years gift of life he had following open heart surgery. That heart attack and the life-extending surgery changed his outlook on life, according to his 28-year-old son, Dave McKinney. That included traveling and spending more time with family and friends. “He knew his time was limited...He told us he loved us a lot.”
Augustan Bob Hizey, a close family friend, said “Roger was always the life of the party and had his own way of bringing out the best in people. He will definitely be missed by the entire Augusta community.
“Roger was a very giving person. He had a definite influence on people. Roger was positive and he saw people in a positive manner. His spirit will be a part of people for a long time.”
Mr. McKinney was born Dec. 21, 1935, in Wichita to Thomas Russel and Irma Elizabeth Ferguson McKinney.
He married Joann Hayes in Howard on Nov. 22, 1956. She survives.
Mr. McKinney attended schools in Howard, Coffeyville Junior College and Wichita State University. He was graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Banking.
He joined Prairie State Bank in 1974 as vice president and served as an executive vice president since 1977. He managed Prairie State’s investments, the customer investment division as well as working as a loan official with specialization in commercial and real estate.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he served as the church treasurer for several years and also was on the church’s administrative board and the Kansas Bankers Association.
Mr. McKinney was a former member of the Augusta Rotary Club, the Elks Lodge, and the AMCI board of directors.
