5 people from our area die in traffic accidents
Staff & Wire Report
Five people from the Augusta area were killed in traffic accidents on Kansas roads over the past few days, including three people who died early Saturday when a car involved in a drag race went out of control on a Wichita street and slammed into a tree.
The accident in which three people died occurred about 2:15 a.m. Saturday in east Wichita when a car traveling at speeds up to 100 mph went out of control and slammed sideways into a tree, ripping the car in half, said police lieutenant Larry Kitterman.
The victims were identified as James Johnson, 24, of Augusta, Aurora Martinez 31, of Wichita, and Rebecca Pykiet,_ 18, of Douglass.
Passenger Vickie Gansen of Augusta was hospitalized at the HCA Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. She was reported in fair condition as a patient there this morning.
Kitterman said the car had been spotted racing another vehicle at speeds up to 100 mph. The driver of the other car turned off at another street shortly before the accident occurred.
On Friday, a Benton teen, 17-year-old Jason B. Reed, died as result of injuries suffered in a car-truck collision near Towanda. The accident occurred at the intersection of K-254 and Kechi Road, according to a sheriff’s office report.
Reed was reportedly driver of the car which pulled onto the highway into the path of an east-bound semi-trailer truck driven by Bertice Duke Jr. of Norman, Okla. Duke suffered minor injuries.
Kyle Venator, 17, of Towanda, a passenger in Reed’s car, also suffered minor injuries.
Late Thursday, two Augusta
men, Michael Johansen and Benjamin Penn Jr. died in high speed crash in southeast Wichita. The vehicle in which they were riding left a curve of K-15 highway, plunged down an embankment, struck two utility poles, and overturned.
Two men were killed when their car went out of control Saturday on the Kansas Turnpike about nine miles south of Emporia, the Kansas Highway Patrol said.
Douglas Steele Jr., 18, of Emporia, and Brent Gutherie, 19, of Hartford, were killed when the car left the roadway about 2 a.m. Saturday, went into a median and ditch and became airborne before flipping.
Steve L. Zinn, 35, Goessel, died Friday night when a truck went out of control in Newton and rolled over several times.
