Roger A. Hill dies at home
Former Augustan Roger A. Hill, 49, Lawrence, died at his home Sunday, Nov. 13.
His funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, at the Plymouth Congregational Church in Lawrence with Dr. Kendell Baker officiating and burial in a Lawrence cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the Warren McElwain Funeral Home in Lawrence between 7 and 8 o’clock Tuesday evening, Nov. 15.
Memorials to the Kansas University Endowment Association have been suggested.
He was born Sept. 19, 1939 in El Dorado to Albert and Irene Hill. His mother, who lives in Augusta, survives.
On July 17, 1965, he married Suzan Gustafson in Lawrence. She also survives.
Hill was recently named manager of the Hallmark Cards Inc. plant at Leavenworth. He joined Hallmark in 1964.
He was a 1957 graduate of Augusta High School and received his bachelor’s degree (1961) and master’s degree (1963) from the University of Kansas. He played on the KU Jayhawk football team from 1958 through 1961.
He was active in civic affairs and belonged to and/or served with the following organizations: Rotary Club, Salvation Army, Aqua Hawks Swim Club, Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, Douglass County Citizens on Alcoholism, Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Crescent Home for Special Children, Lawrence Arts Center, Breakfast Cosmopolitan Club, and the Lawrence Country Club.
In addition to his mother and wife, Hill leaves four daughters, Lisa Eick of Farmington Hills, Mich., Lauren Lyons of Des Moines, Iowa, Kristi Hill of Bloomington, Ind., and Kathy Hill, of the home; a sister, Sarah Nusbaum of Wichita, and one grandson.
The Warren McElwain Funeral Home in Lawrence is in charge of arrangements.
Burial for Crook set for Wednesday
Vera Goldie Nellie Crook, 70, of Douglass died Sunday, Nov. 13, at the Medicalodge in Douglass.
Her services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Dunsford Chapel. Rev. Edwin Gray will be officiating and burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery.
She was born on July 16, 1918 to Joseph and Rosetta (Tankersley) Tucker in Augusta.
On Dec. 28, 1936 she married Robert LaFever in Wichita. He preceded her in death in 1970.
Vera and Richard Crook were united in marriage in Galen, Mo. on Nov. 12, 1976.
Survivors include her husband, Richard; sons, James, Claude, Rodney LaFever all of Wichita, Donald LaFever of Rocky Comfort, Mo., two stepsons Chris Crook of Wichita, Sam Crook of Logansport, Ind.; daughters Martha Ward of Douglass, Linda Oliver of Norwich, Judith Miller
of Wheaton, Mo., Yvonda Hilton,
Nancy Shield both of Wichita, Beverly Glisson of Fort Smith, Ark., Eva Miller of Orlando, Fla Collette Sprague of Tulsa, Okla., Cindy Simpson of Widemann, Ark.; brother, Sammual Tucker of Wichita; sisters, Frances Smith of Wichita and Wanona Gayer of Cabool, Mo.; 48 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Leah Miller died at Susan B. Allen
Leah E. Miller, 85, of Augusta died Saturday, Nov. 12, at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Kirby-Morris Chapel in El
Dorado. Burial will be in the Sunset Lawns and Rev. George Goudie will officiate.
She was born to Arthur Lucas and Grace (Hulbert) Ryan on Feb. 9, 1903 in Perry, Okla.
On July 23, 1923 she married Claiborn Miller in Emporia. He preceded her in death in 1975.
Survivors include sons, Jack L. of Mountainberg, Ark., Patrick R. of San Bernardino, Calif.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She lived most of her life in the El Dorado area and spent the past several years in Augusta. Leah worked as a clerk for the Butler County District Court and in the Sheriffs Office. She taught a Bible class at Osage Manor where she lived.
Memorials have been established with the Souther Baptist Church in Augusta.

Augustans’ brother died Wednesday
Willis G. Coulson, 76, of Los Angeles, Calif. and brother of Raymond Coulson adn Lucy Dennett both of Augusta, died Wednesday, Nov. 16, in teh Veterans Hospital at Tucson, Ariz. He was born Oct. 3, 1912 in Wichita to Roy G. and Mable V.
(Cooper) Coulson.
Willis’ sister, Rugh Andre of
Casa Grande, Ariz. also survives.
A brother, Dale, preceded him in death.
Cremation had been performed and his ashes will be interred in Maple Grove Cemetery in Wichita.
