TUESDAY, MAY 30, 1989
Leon man died last Thursday
Elmer Edwin Pond, 82, of Leon and a barber for over 60 years, died Thursday at the Augusta Medical Complex Long Term Care Unit.
Services were held today at the Leon First Baptist Church with burial in the Leon Cemetery.
He was born March 9, 1907 in Lebanon, Mo. to Henry E. and Mary Ellen (Egan) Pond.
On Oct. 12, 1930 he was united in marriage to Una Holt in Leon. She preceded him in death on Sept. 3, 1974.
Survivors include sons, Jerry of Sedgwick, Gene of Leon; daughters, Lynda Johnson of Augusta, Sue Morris of Overland Park; brother, Reuban of Caney; sister, Iva Teeter of Kansas City, Mo.; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
One great-granddaughter preceded him in death in 1988.
Memorials are to the Alzheimer Disease and Related Disorders, P.O. box 2763, Wichita, Kan. 67201.

James M. MacKay rosary Wednesday
Douglass resident James Marvin MacKay, 67, died Monday at the Medicalodge of Douglass.
A rosary will begin at 7:30 on Wednesday evening at the St. James Catholic Church.
Services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at St. James with Fa. Jim Billinger officiating. Burial will follow the service at Elmwood Cemetery.
The retired painter for Beech Aircraft is survived by sons, Marvin L., Paul, Gregg, all of Douglass, Ronald of Mulvane; daughter, Teresa MacKay of Douglass; and eight grandchildren.
He was born to James Neil and Elsie Valentine (Chance) MacKay on March 10, 1922 in Cowley County and on June 12, 1948 he married Ethelreda Rosalie Simon in Augusta. She preceded him in death on Aug. 29, 1984.
Memorials have been established with the St. James Catholic Church and the Butler County Lung Association.
Dunsford Funeral Home has the arrangements.

Herbert Gates died Saturday
Herbert “Hap” Fredrick Gates, 78, of Augusta and a retired gauger for Mobil Oil Company, died Saturday at the Augusta Medical Complex.
Born to Herbert Fredrick and Martha (Morgan) Gates on Aug. 10, 1910 in Maize he married Eunice Frances Eleta Mallicoat in 1929 in Winfield.
Survivors include his wife, Eunice; sons, Herbert J. of Holton, Rev. William Ross Gates of Carpinteria, Calif.; brother, Leverett of Louisiana; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services for the member of Masonic Lodge Orient 051 in Topeka will be Thursday at 1 p.m. in the Dunsford Funeral Home chapel with his son Rev. William Gates officiating.

Harriet Markley funeral Friday
Homemaker Harriet Louise Markley, 92, 2101 Dearborn, died today at Augusta Medical Complex.
A graveside service for Mrs. Markley is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at Elmwood Cemetery. Rev. Robert A. Box will officiate.
She was born Dec. 8, 1896 in Oklahoma to Otis and Blanch Eagleson Hiner.
On Feb. 22, 1920, she married Roy Ellis Markley in Oklahoma. He preceded her in death in 1959.
She leaves four sons, Kenneth, Dwight, and Lyle, all of Augusta, and Clifford of Birmingham, Ala.; 11 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
Memorials to the First Baptist Church have been suggested.
The Dunsford Funeral Home of Augusta is in charge of arrangements.

Rural Augustan died Wednesday
Louie E. Parrett, Route 1, died Wednesday, May 31, at the St. Joseph Medical Center in Wichita.
His funeral service will be 10 o’clock Friday morning, June 2, at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Wichita. Burial will be in Lake-view Memorial Gardens.
This retired Cessna Aircraft employee was born Dec. 30, 1918 in Welch, Okla., as a son of William Francis and Julia Ott Parrett.
He was a World War II veteran and held memberships in Elks, Masons, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include his wife, Jean and a daughter, Judith Ann, both of the home; three stepsons, Frank Neukirch Jr., Hal Neukirch, and Johnny Neukirch, all of El Dorado; a brother, Amos Parrett of Copan, Okla.; a sister, Grace Rolfing of Fort Worth, Texas, and seven grandchildren.
