‘Pick’ Pickard funeral tomorrow
Arkansas native Wilbur W. Pickard came to Augusta many years ago, but he quickly became a community booster who was better known to most folks as “Pick.”
Pick died Monday afternoon at Augusta Medical Complex at age 64.
His funeral will be at 10 o’clock tomorrow morning in the Dunsford Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Don Scott officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
He was born March 7, 1925 in Hope, Ark., as a son of Andrew Warren and Ethel Lanora Putnam Pickard.
On May 27, 1943, he married Carline Esther Hatch in a ceremony at Hope. She survives.
Longtime friend and business associate Gary Dryden described Pick as a “very active and valuable Augustan. I will miss him a great deal.”
Pick was active in the Augusta Lions Club and was recently elected as a 1989-90 director of that organization. Over the years, he had held every office in the local service club including president and was a recruiter of many new members.
He was also a member of the American Legion and was active in Augusta Chamber of Commerce.
Prior to remodeling of the Augusta Plaza shopping center, Pick and his wife operated the
Ben Franklin store on the west side of the center. After that venture, they owned and operated The Idea Shop in downtown Augusta.
More recently, Pick was working as a real estate sales associate and broker with Simmons Realty Associates Inc. That business will be closed tomorrow for his funeral. He began with Simmons and worked at other realty firms here before returning to Simmons late last year.
Pick was a member of the Butler County Board of Realtors, state and national realtor associations.
He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
Pick was a member of the First Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he leaves a son, Steve Pickard of Wichita; three daughters, Sherry
Kincaid and Sandy Hudson, both of Augusta, and Stacy Lipscomb of Beaumont, Texas; five sisters, Thelma Messer of Prescott, Ark., Vila Mitchell, Beryl Pickard, and Noreen Purtle, all of Hope, Ark., and Elva Messer of Texarkana, Texas, and eight grandchildren.
Memorials to the Lions Sight Foundation have been suggested.
