Verna J. Hein dies at age 69
Former Douglass resident Verna J. Hein, 69, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, in Leavenworth.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon in the Douglass Cemetery.
She was born Aug. 10, 1920 in Fall River as a daughter of Howard and Minnie Laverne Erwin Kannass.
On May 11, 1946, she married Melvin Hein in a ceremony at Udall. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Janice Nachbor of Kansas City, Mo., and Charlene Ketter of Leavenworth; a sister, June Boyd of Bentley, and three grandchildren.
Memorials to the Douglass First Christian Church have been suggested.
The Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Monday, October 2, 1989 Phillip N. Holland funeral Tuesday
A funeral service for Phillip N. “Phil” Holland, Wichita, will be 11 o’clock Tuesday morning, Oct. 3, at the Dunsford Funeral Home here. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
The 58-year-old Holland died Saturday, Sept. 30, at his home of heart failure.
He is the husband of the former Carolyn Stevens and the son-in-law of Kate Stevens, who presently resides at the Holland home.
He was born Dec. 7, 1930 in Wichita as a daughter of Marble F. Holland and O. Esther Ship-man Holland.
On July 2, 1969, he and Carolyn J. Stevens were married at Las Vegas, Nev.
Survivors include three sons, Kent, Todd and Bruce; two daughters, Tamara and Lisa, and five grandchildren.
Mr. Holland, a Navy veteran, worked as a mailer for the Wichita Eagle-Beacon and was a member of the Broadway Christian Church.
He also held membership in 32nd Degree masons, Buster G. Brown, Scottish Rite Temple, Midian Shrine, and Midian Shrine Oriental Band.
Memorials to the Shrine Plane of Mercy have been suggested.

Clarence E. Harper service Wednesday
Clarence Elmer Harper, 74, rural Augusta, died Sunday, Oct. 1, at Augusta Medical Complex.
A graveside service has been set for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, at Elmwood Cemetery. Rev. George Goudie of First Southern Baptist Church will officiate.
He was born Jan. 14, 1915 in Carroll County, Mo., as a son of Sim Harper and Pauline Davis Harper.
He and Fern Lichlyter were united in marriage here Aug. 16, 1939. She survives.
In addition to his wife, he leaves a son, Steve of Augusta;
two brothers, Caleb Harper of El Dorado, and Sam Harper of Hollister, Mo.; two sisters, Donna Holcomb of El Dorado and Bonnie Ritchey, Hutchinson, and grandchildren Christy and Scott Harper.
During his life, Harper worked as a construction welder and was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Christian Church.
He was a member of Reno Lodge in Hutchinson, the Wichita Consistory, and Midian Shrine.
Memorials to the Shrine Bum Center have been suggested.

‘Pat’ Montgomery dies at hospital
Patricia Ann “Pat” Montgomery, 58, Augusta, died Saturday, Sept. 30, at the St. Joseph Medical Center in Wichita.
Her funeral service will be 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 3, at the Dunsford Funeral Home and burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
She was born here Feb. 25, 1931 to Frank Thompson and Grace Gahm Thompson.
On Aug. 26, 1950, she and John Montgomery were united in marriage during a ceremony
here. He survives.
Other survivors include three daughters, Sue Ellen Totty of El Dorado, Deborah Ann Brooks and Jaylyn Kay Thomas, both of Augusta; a brother, Frank Thompson of Mahaska; 11 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
She was a member of the First Christian Church and worked in sales at K mart.
Memorials to the pulmonary critical care unit at the St. Joseph Medical Center in Wichita have been suggested.
