Brother Dies In Winfield
Glenn McCurry, 75, Winfield, brother of Corbett McCurry of Douglass, died yesterday at his home.
His service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home in Winfield. Rev. George Gardner will officiate and burial will be in the Richland Cemetery in Douglass.
A memorial has been established with the Cowley County Hospice Association in Winfield.
He was born May 15, 1907 in Douglass to George and Elizabeth Russell McCurry.
He married Marie Bell Nov. 25, 1931 in Winfield. She survives.
He did tool planning for Beech Aircraft Co., in Wichita before his retirement.
He was a member of the Albert Pike Masonic Lodge of Wichita and past president of the Beech Employees Club.
Survivors also include a son, Alan McCurry of Sullivans Island, S.C.; a daughter, Carolyn Mantz of Winfield; another brother, Emmett McCurry of Wichita; sisters, Grace Lickley of Wichita, Virginia Chance of Rose Hill, Goldene Milstead of Dallas, Texas, and five grandchildren.
Dies At 37
Gerry Lynn Wehr, 37, Ponca City, Okla., granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Taylor DeWeese of Augusta, died early this morning from an apparent heart attack while vacationing in Branson, Mo.
Her service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Northeast Baptist Church in Ponca City.
She was a secretary in Ponca City.
Other survivors include a son, Chris Wehr of the home; two brothers, Glen of Tulsa, Okla., and Gary of Ponca City; her parents, Homer and Bonnie DeWeese of Ponca City; and uncles and aunts in Augusta including, Mr. and Mrs. C.O. DeFore, Mr. and Mrs. Marion Smart and Mr. and Mrs. Keith Corbin.

Father Dies In Newton
Hebert W. Winter, 67, Peabody, father of Sharon Spangler of Douglass, died Oct. 8 at Axtell Hospital in Newton.
Graveside services were at 3 p.m. today at Prairie Lawn Cemetery in Peabody. Pastor Gerroll Martens officiated.
He was born June 2, 1915 in Durham to Jacob J. and Katherine Snider Winter.
He married Opal Converse Aug. 27, 1939. She survives.
He was a retired automobile salesman and an avid sportsman.
Survivors also include sons, Larry H. Winter of Newton, Garry H. Winter of Wichita and Harry H. Winter of Walton; two other daughters, Melody Grosse and Koni Miller, both of Peabody; a stepmother, Nellie Cole of Cedar Point; brothers, Ed Winter of Marion and Bill Winter of Haysville; sisters, Ella Mensching of Waverly, Iowa and Lillian Sturgeon of Cornville, Ariz., and Rachel Keller of Marion and nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
V.C. Johnson Dies In Texas
Vera Cartee Johnson, 82, Breckenridge, Texas, formerly of Augusta, died there Oct. 8.
Graveside services will be Oct. 12 at Elmwood Cemetery. Rev. Robert Brooks will officiate.
She was born March 26, 1900 in Glascow, Mo., to John and Amanda Shifflit Soloman.
She married Loel Cartee Aug. 19, 1916 in El Dorado. He died in 1957. She married W. Archie Johnson Sept. 23, 1963 in Augusta. He died this year.
Survivors include a son, Roy V. Cartee of Cisco, Texas and two grandchildren.
Three sons, Merle, Maurice and Melvin, preceded her in death.

M. Matthews Dies At 95
Marie C. Matthew, 95, Leon, died Tuesday at the Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital in El Dorado.
Services will be at 2 p.m., Thursday at the Carlson Funeral Home in El Dorado. Burial will be in the Leon cemetery.
She was born July 4, 1887, in Indiana to James and Ora Belle McNeely Drake. She lived in Leon for the past 82 years.
She married Edward Guy Matthew Aug. 17, 1910 in Leon. He preceded her in death on Dec. 19, 1981. She was a member of the Leon United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Glenn of Topeka; a daughter, Althea Pickrell of Leon, six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial has been established with the Leon United Methodist Church.
Sherman Dies In El Dorado
W.M. “Bill” Sherman, 79, El Dorado, died Tuesday at the Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital.
Services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday at the Carlson Funeral Home in El Dorado. Burial will be in the Sherman cemetery.
Born July 17, 1903, on a farm east of El Dorado, Sherman worked for 42 years for Sinclair Oil Co., as a pulling unit operator. He was the son of John and Georgia Ellen Jellison Sherman.
He married Estyl Crommett Oct. 18, 1929 at Newton. She survives.
Mr. Sherman was a member of the Elk’s Lodge in El Dorado and was quite active in the El Dorado baseball community.
Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. Anna Peal of El Dorado.
Memorials may been sent to the Elk’s Training Center or El Dorado summer baseball program.
