Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Elmwood Cemetery. A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church. Rev. Robert Brooks will officiate.

He was the first president of the Augusta Medical Complex board of directors. He was an active member of that board. In November of 1980, he was accorded a director emeritus status by the hospital board. The special designation recognized Simpson for his special service and support of hospital facilities. During that ceremony Dr. A.L. Quest and Dr. Dale Anderson, also members of the first hospital board, described him as a “ramrod" of that first board.
“Virgil was a help with the whole building program and he was our chief honcho of engineering," according to Dr. Anderson.
“Even after the hospital was built, Virgil spent many hours working in its behalf," Dr. Quest said.
