Fern Shaver

Verl Fern Shaver, 77, Douglass, died Monday, Sept. 2, at Augusta Medical Complex.
She was the father of James Shaver of Augusta.
Her funeral service will be 2 o’clock Friday afternoon, Sept. 6, at the Douglass United Methodist Church
with Rev. Dan Ferguson officiating. Burial will be in the Douglass Cemetery.
She was born July 16, 1914 in Silfer, Iowa, as a daughter of - John Albert Mitchel and Mary Rose Ellen Ward Mitchel.
On April 17,1938, she married Claud Shaver in a ceremony at Grand Junction, Colo. He survives.
This homemaker was a member of the Douglass United Methodist Church and Eastern Star.
Other survivors include sons Marvin of Golden, Colo.; a brother, Paul Mitchel of Cedaredge, Colo.;
sisters, Ida Ruth Ferguson of Thornton, Colo., Laura Mae Lloyd of Fruita, Colo.; Estel Zophi of Hayward, Calif.;
six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials to the American Cancer Society have been suggested.
The Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home of Douglass is in charge of arrangements.

Jean Russell

Norma Jean Russell, 63, Augusta, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, at the HCA Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Her funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Dunsford Funeral Home chapel.
Rev. Bob Ely will officiate and burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
She was born Jan. 24, 1928 in Wayside as a daughter of Harold Mcllwain and Lillian Eloise Schnedler McIlwain.
Her mother survives.
Russell had been chief communications officer of the Augusta Department of Public Safety since 1974.
She once described her dispatching duties as “challenging” and filled with variety.
“You have to be calm. Very often when people call they’re upset, maybe hysterical is a better word.
They are in a situation that is different for them. Something they have never experienced,” she said,
“If I am calm, I can help them get calm, That is important because they must give me information.
I have to get it correctly.”
In addition to dispatching policemen, firemen, and ambulance personnel,
Russell did numerous other chores for the safety department including as typing bond information,
fishing and bicycle licenses, case reports, complaints as well as work with mug shots and identification files.
Russell was a member of the Kansas Peace Officers Association as well as APCO.
Other survivors include son Mike Russell of Poteau, Okla., Sue Spangler of Bums, and five grandchildren.
Her mother lives in Nevada, Mo.
