Opal Simmons

Opal Simmons, 86, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 1997, at Augusta Medical Complex. She was a resident of the Sterling House in Augusta and a former resident of Severy.
Her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, at Severy United Methodist Church Pastors Robert Cooper, Brad Mann, Mark Simmons and Brad Simmons will officiate. Eastern Star memorial services will be conducted by Columbia Chapter 142 of Howard. Burial will be in South Lawn Cemetery, Severy.
Opal Shugart was born May 2, 1910, to Leroy Elmer and Rachel D. (Spiker) Shugart at LaHarpe, ILL. She moved with her family to Missouri at an early age and graduated from high school at Knox City, Mo., in 1928.
After high school, Opal moved to Climax where she worked at a grocery store in Piedmont.
She married Lewis Russell Simmons May 4, 1929, at Eureka.
They owned and operated a restaurant in Climax before moving several times.
In the early 1930’s they returned to Kansas and opened a cream station in Severy in 1936 and began raising Angus cattle.
They started Simmons’ Cafe and Service Station in 1954. They also lived in Augusta and El Dorado.
Russell preceded her in death Sept. 1, 1995.
Opal helped establish the Severy Senior Center, served as a 4-H leader and was an active member of the Kansas Republican Party.
She was also a long-time member of the Rebekah Lodge and was a Past Worthy Matron and 50-year member of Columbia Chapter 142, Order of the Eastern Star, Howard. She attended Severy United Methodist Church.
Survivors are sons, Lewis Simmons and J.W. Simmons both of Augusta; daughter, Joyce Marin of Littleton, Colo.; foster-son, Richard McPherron of Wichita, brothers, Lewis Shugart of Summersville, Mo., and Eldon Shugart of Severy; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
Memorials have been established with the Severy Senior Center and the Severy United Methodist Church. Contributions may be left with Zimmerman Funeral Home, Howard.

Lee Nell Verner

Lee Nell Verner, 75, of Wichita and formerly of Augusta died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 1997, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
The family will receive friends at Carson-Wall Funeral Home, Parsons, from 7 to 8 p.m.
Her funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, at Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons with Rev. J.C. Kelly Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Springhill Cemetery.
Lee Nell Tatum was born Sept. 15, 1921, to Henry and Lois (Green) Tatum, in Goodman, Mo. She graduated from high school in Anderson, Mo.
She married Leo Ernest Verner Jan. 17, 1942, in Miami, Okla. He preceded her in death in 1949-
She was a members of the former Washington Avenue Methodist Church in Parsons and worked at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant.
Survivors are son, Thomas A. Verner of Wichita; foster son, Marvin Wilson of Greeley, Colo.; brothers, Billy Gene Tatum of Howard and Jack Floward Tatum of LaSalle, Colo.; sisters Ruth Fink of Parsons and Dorothy Baldwin of Goodman, Mo., and two grandchildren,
